My perceptions

I have come to experience the many avenues journalism offers, and really do enjoy each aspect of it. From experiencing news, feature and review writing to page layout, proof reading and roles as editor, I realise each role impacts on one other and this is the reason why good teamwork yields a successful outcome.

No ambiguity
I understand that when writing for an audience, one must write concisely, accurately and simply. A good journalist will deconstruct complex issues or events in a manner easily accessible for their audience, without being patronising or alienating them with verbose jargon. The roles of photographs and graphics play an important role in anchoring the text; and these are two skills I seek to develop at every available opportunity.

Strong ideas
For journalism to succeed, I believe it is important to coin and develop interesting ideas. In particular, ideas that make the reader question the way we live our live, who we serve and who serves us. Whether it’s a news story, feature, review or column, the ability to encapsulate an audience without compromising impartiality is essential.

Giving the reader the dignity to come up with their own consensus in response to the issue in hand without manufacturing a bias angle will keep the keep the journalist's credibility intact.

The importance of journalism
Journalism is essential for keeping checks and balances in our world today; fostering a ‘watchdog’ role over the welfare of our environment, citizens and property. For every journalist’s action there is a reaction, and a good journalist will act responsibly in delivering accurate, balanced yet gripping material.
